The Great Gatsby
"Gatsby as a $190 million fever dream. Excess about excess."
Baz Luhrmann turns Fitzgerald's meditation on the American Dream into a $190 million fever dream of confetti, Jay-Z beats, and Leonardo DiCaprio doing his best "old sport" at a camera that won't stop moving. It's excess about excess - which is either the point or the problem, depending on your tolerance for being yelled at by a movie.
you want Fitzgerald's tragedy repackaged as a $190 million music video. DiCaprio is genuinely great - his "old sport" delivery alone is worth the ticket. The party scenes are intoxicating. The emotional scenes are... also intoxicating, but in a different way.
subtlety is your love language. Luhrmann doesn't whisper when he can scream, and he doesn't scream when he can set off fireworks while screaming. If you think the green light should be a metaphor and not a literal laser show, this will hurt.
